Celebrity Sighting at Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site

Sep 15, 2017Field Notes

Every once in awhile, a famous face stops into one of our stores on a visit to a national park, which creates quite a flurry of excitement!

On July 1, just before the July 4th holiday, Stephen Colbert and members of his family visited Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site. They took a tour of the site and did some shopping in the Eastern National store, where EN Site Manager Jane Grossman assisted them with a purchase. Jane learned that this was Mrs. Colbert’s second visit to Carl Sandburg Home, and this time, she brought her family along to see it as well.

Mr. Colbert sent out a tweet of his park visit that day, asking folks to share their brush with #AmericanGreatness over the July 4th holiday. With over 1,240 retweets and over 12,800 likes, Colbert’s tweet generated a lot of engagement on social media. Jane says, “The park was honored to have had their family stop by and use Sandburg as his inspiration for his Fourth of July #AmericanGreatness tweet. It was a wonderful boost for visiting national parks, and we hope he visits again.”
