San Juan National Historic Site utilized approximately $106,000 in donations to enhance interpretation, education, volunteer programs, two Puerto Rican folk dance events, and the annual Festival de Tunas. Through America’s National Parks™ Funds at Work, the site also expanded visitor accessibility services, including sign language support, restocked more than 275,000 park brochures along with additional Junior Ranger badges and pencils, and provided updated interpretive training for staff.
For more than 250 years, Spain fortified the strategically important island of Puerto Rico, lining the battlements with cannons to defend its settlements. Thanks to donated funds, visitors can now better understand how these cannons protected Spanish settlers through a new interpretive video focused on the site’s historic artillery defenses.
